Wisin and Yandel Hit the Studio for Chosen Few II

Quinee Butler, Reggaetonline.net - May 03, 2006 - One of the most anticipated Albums of the year is Boy Wonders second production Chosen Few II. Boy Wonder has been crisscrossing the United States as well as the island of Puerto Rico to meet up with Reggaeton artists to finish recording for both the CD and DVD for the project. Reggaetonline.net caught up with the producer as he works with Reggaeton artists Wisin and Yandel on his one of the last songs for ‘Chosen Few II, EL Documental’.

Wisin and Yandel hit the studio this week to put the finishing touches on the song they plan to contribute to the album. The duo is considered one of the best in Reggaeton. Their album ‘Pa’l Mundo’ was one of 2005’s biggest releases selling more than 28,000 copies alone in its first week. Reggaeton fans noticed that the vocals of Wisin and Yandel, Daddy Yankee, and Ivy Queen were missing from the CD portion of ‘Chosen Few’.

Although Wisin and Yandel were included in the first documentary, they were not available to contribute a song for ‘Chosen Few’ I. In ‘Chosen Few II’ fans of the duo will be satisfied that Wisin and Yandel are included in both parts of the CD and DVD compilation. “Wisin and Yandel are one of the top two duos in Reggaeton. I couldn’t have ended a project better than winning a Billboard award as wells as recording with Artists with the talent of Wisin and Yandel.”

The first installation of ‘Chosen Few: El Documental’ was a huge hit among new fans of Reggaeton. It was the first documentary on Reggaeton and brought fans a lot closer to their favorite artists. ‘Chosen Few: El Documental’ has helped many put a face to the names of the artists and songs they produced. It gave history on the origins of Reggaeton and highlighted some of the old school artists and key player in Reggaeton today.

‘Chosen Few: El Documental’ is considered the bible of Reggaeton for fans world wide that do not have the luxury of living in Puerto Rico or know little about its origins. ‘Chosen Few’ gives its audience a unique view of what Reggaeton is through the eyes of the artists. The almost 3 hour documentary provided fans with the information they needed about Reggaeton in general. Word of the new CD spread by word of mouth for 2 years after its release because of the quality of the information it contained. The icing on the cake for all who purchased the CD was hearing new artist LDA’s smash hit “Hoy” and the ground breaking anthem “Reggaeton Latino” by Don Omar which was also performed at the MTV music awards. Boy Wonder ironically reminds us at the beginning of “Reggaeton Latino”, “It’s not about making hits it’s about making a classic.” Reggaeton Latino is now definitely considered a classic.

At this year’s Latin Billboard Awards ‘Chosen Few’ received long awaited recognition for its contributions to the Reggaeton. Among the nominations for Latin Compilation Album of The Year were:

"Mas Flow 2" Luny Tunes & Baby Ranks (Mas Flow/Machete)
"Boy Wonder & Chencho Records Present: El Draft 2005" (Chencho/Chosen Few Emerald/Urban Box Office)
"Chosen Few: El Documental" Various Artists (Chosen Few Emerald/Urban Box Office)
"The Hitmakers of Reggaeton" Various Artists (VI/Machete).

Luny Tune’s and Baby Rank’s Mas Flow II is a superb CD and one of the best productions hands down to most Reggaeton fans. However, “Chosen Few: El Documental” is in a class of its own because of its contribution to the Reggaeton movement. “I was very, very shocked and surprised that Chosen Few actually won the Billboards,” recalls Boy Wonder. I have been to one other award show and came up empty handed, so I went to the Billboard Conference and Awards for a chance to network with people.

This is the first time two albums by the same producer were nominated in the same Billboard category. "It was a surprised that both albums were included in the nominations this year," says Boy Wonder, with a grin from ear to ear. "Chencho could not believe it either. We both did 'El Draft' help new artists out and this simply showed us that our hard work paid off. Now we are finally being recognized.” As far as sales go, 'Chosen Few, El Documental' s number one, 'Mas Flow II' is second and 'El Draft' is third.

Boy Wonder is also quick to point out that this project did not happen because of one man. “Everyone who was nominated in that category was a part of the project. The ‘Chosen Few Billboard award was award for all the artists; it’s an award and tribute to the genre as whole. When the project first started, I didn’t think it would be as successful as it was. I am thankful to the artists for believing in me. The success of this project means the success for the whole genre.” The best part of many of the artists that were included in ‘Chosen Few is that they share many of the same qualities, including humility. It is this humility that keeps them grounded and loved by Reggaeton fans everywhere.

Now Boy Wonder, Wisin and Yandel, Tainy as well as other members of the Mas Flow crew sit at the studio and work diligently into the wee hours of the night just to finish one piece of the ‘Chosen Few’ puzzle. Fans have no idea how grueling the process is to make one song. The reward for us will be hearing the finished project in a few months.
